Pirates wins another weekend

Not only did Pirates pass $200 million overseas as reported by Reuters:

In virtual vacuum-cleaner fashion, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” drew the bulk of international business during the weekend, garnering an estimated $62 million from 35 territories.Walt Disney Pictures’ monster swashbuckler grossed nearly four times the weekend tally of the No. 2 film, “Superman Returns” ($16.3 million from 40 markets). In just three weekends of release — and with about 40% of the overseas market yet to play — “Dead Man’s Chest” has tallied $217 million, nearly double “Superman’s” international total ($110 million).

But it took the domestic box office for the 3rd straight week. I don’t know of anyone personally who has seen this move? It must be all the 13 year girls…Anyway looks like the movie will be the run away for the summer.

Cinemanow Brun gets hotter

I read this article on latimes.com and thought there were two really good points I mentioned in my earlier post.

Point 1)

CinemaNow’s service uses relatively new anti-piracy technology that prevents a burned DVD itself from being copied. Because that technology is still being tested, the initial batch of titles being offered was described by Forrester Research analyst Josh Bernoff as what’s left “at the video store when you arrive too late and the shelves are picked clean.”
I love the part about being picked clean, but he is spot on with his comments.

Point 2)

The limited content selection and older titles is not good…

“The limited scope of titles available in the initial phase of CinemaNow’s service will limit its usefulness for learning whether consumers are ready to pay to burn DVD movies at home, analysts said.”
“There’s a huge amount of interest in this,” he said. “The results ofthis will be scrutinized very closely. I just wish they’d come out with something better than ‘Charlie’s Angles: Full Throttle.’ They needmovies that people want to pirate.”

I could not agree more with his point. Give people what they want to pirate! If this a test give at least one new realese people really want to own.

With all that said I can’t go to a news source with out reading about this new technology. It’s online, in print and on tv, so let’s hope this buzz turns into a real product the consumer wants.

Cinemanow Burn to DVD

So Movielink talked about this new technology but Cinemanow has actually produced it! This is a very big day for the movie industry. It seems they are now ready to take the bold steps required to re-connect with their customers. Burn to DVD functionality is  a huge step forward.  Let’s hope this works as well as  reported on news.com

Oh, and movielink is supposed to already have this technology but it won’t be ready for 6 months, or so? Hmmm not sure what that means.

Online movie seller CinemaNow late on Tuesday unveiled a new service that allows customers to download a movie from the Internet and copy it onto a DVD that can be played on any standard DVD player. The new, legal download-to-burn service marks a major step for Hollywood as its movie and television studios seek to offer movies and TV shows to consumers via the Web for playback on TVs and portable DVD players. The studios see digital movie downloads as generating new revenues from old titles, and CinemaNow aims to do just that by first offering only 100 older films, such as 2003′s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and 1992′s “Scent of a Woman.”

Movielink DVD brun

Movielink, which distributes movies over the Internet, is close to fixing one of the main drawbacks to downloading films over the Web.Santa Monica, Calif.-based Movielink has purchased technology from software company Sonic Solutions that makes it possible for customers to transfer the movies they download onto DVDs, according to a Sonic Solutions’ spokesman.

It’s about time. However if you go and read the full cnet story you will see no timeliness. Meaning this may not be available for 2 weeks, 6 months, 2 years… It’s nice to hear Hollywood is finally listening to it’s customers, but we still don’t know when this product will be ready for use.
Who will make it to market first Cinemanow or movielink and who will have the better product? I guess only time will tell. Until then most people I know still love their netflix and on demand…
