MPAA and hackers

MPAA using hackers?

So the organization that has made a name for itself by prosecuting people for violating copyright law now might be in hot water for breaking the law itself.

“A lawsuit filed Wednesday accuses the Motion Picture Association of America of hiring a hacker to steal information from a company that the MPAA has accused of helping copyright violators.” (News.com)

Torrentspy.com filed a lawsuit against the MPAA accusing them of paying an individual $15,000 to steal email correspondence to obtain company secrets. The MPAA had filed a suit against Torrentspy.com earlier in the year for facilitating thievery of copyrighted material.

Kori Bernards of the MPAA says the claims by Torrentspy.com are false.

True Hollywood drama.

pod slurping

And you thought ipods were only for music and videos. Think again. A security expert, Abe Usher has created a program that runs on an ipod and can suck data off corporate networks in a matter of minutes.

“To the naked eye, somebody doing this would look like any other employee listening to their iPod at their desk. Alternatively, the person stealing data need not even have access to a keyboard but can simply plug into a USB port on any active machine.” reports Will Sturgen of Cnet News.com

This poses a real risk for many corporations and individuals. With the average data theft costing companies $350,000 dollars this is a very real issue network admins will need to address sooner than later.

Weekend numbers

The Weekend numbers and more…

As suspected the “DA Vinci code” was number one in the box office. Domestically it pulled in $77 million for the weekends run. However it did $224 million world wide. This is a huge win Sony pictures. You always take a bit of a gamble when you make religion a core element of your movie, regardless if you are showing religion in a positive or negative light.

Threats of boycotts by religious groups only helped to push the movie in center stage and build the hype and buzz.

While “Da Vinci code” took spot number one “Over the Hedge” came in a very distant second.$37.2 million. Still not bad. “See No Evil”, a Lions Gate film also opened this weekend. Making $4.3 million.

Here are the estimated top ten movies of the week.

1. The Da Vinci Code, $77 million
2. Over the Hedge, $37.2 million
3. Mission: Impossible III, $11 million
4. Poseidon, $9.2 million
5. RV, $5.1 million
6. See No Evil, $4.3 million
7. Just My Luck, $3.3 million
8. An American Haunting, $1.6 million
9. United 93, $1.4 million
10. Akeelah and the Bee, $1 million

Next week brings us “X-men the Last Stand”. I personally can’t wait.
